The second largest of the seven emirates, Dubai is located on the southeast coast of the Persian gulf. Like the Emirati capital, Abu Dhabi, Dubai’s initial development was based on income generated from oil reserves discovered after the war (in the case of Dubai, the 1960s). However, the emirate’s economy has now diversified, and much of its wealth is generated by real estate, construction, financial services and tourism.
Recently named the 7th most visited city in the world, Dubai’s primary attraction is shopping, and the city boasts the largest mall (or ‘shopping centre’) in the world: The Dubai Mall. The city is also home to the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, which stands at 829.8m.
Of the 2.1 million people living in the city, only 17% are UAE nationals, with the majority of the population originally from India.
In 2013, Dubai won the right to host the World Expo 2020. This prestigious event will cement Dubai’s position as an international hub for conferences and exhibitions for numerous industries. It is predicted the event will generate huge numbers of jobs and bring large economic benefits to the city.
What form/s of interpretation can
- Simultaneous interpreting is the most demanding form of interpreting and interpreters will often work in pairs, swapping every 15-20 minutes to avoid fatigue. It involves listening to the speaker in the source languages and interpreting their speech into the target language at almost exactly the same time. Interpreters carrying out simultaneous interpreting must have many years’ experience as simultaneous interpreting requires a huge amount of knowledge and concentration Simultaneous interpretation is most commonly required at international conferences and a large number of participants.
- Consecutive interpreting is probably the most common type of interpreting. It is used during meetings involving parties speaking different languages such as business and commercial discussions, negotiations, contract exchanges, factory visits and court hearings. Interpreters listen first and then give the interpretation afterwards. For speeches, the interpreter may wait until a pause or the end, at which point they must deliver the translation relatively quickly. Consecutive interpreting may also be used at conferences for panel discussions, Q&A sessions or private discussions between parties - at a stall or elsewhere.
- Facilitating interpreting is used to assist clients who require only limited assistance in the source language. They may need technical or especially complex terminology to be interpreted into their native tongue to avoid misunderstandings but are in general comfortable listening and speaking to the source language without aid. The interpreter stands by to support the client when he/she requires communication assistance.
- Telephone interpreting allows parties who are not able to meet in person to communication via telephone or video conferencing. The interpreter bridges the language gap via the telephone. Sometimes the interpreter is present in one of the two locations, and sometimes he/she is also remotely located.
