The definition of ‘Tribunal’ varies from country to country but is often applied to private judging bodies or institutions with the authority to make judgements about civil claims and disagreements. Sometimes legal arbitration proceedings are entitled ‘Arbitral Tribunals.’
In England and Wales, tribunals are quasi-judicial bodies with clear statutory underpinning. For example, the employment tribunal is a body that convenes to adjudicate employment disputes; often relating to unfair dismissal; equal pay; whistleblowing and discrimination.
However, it would be incorrect to assume that Tribunals primarily deal with employment disputes. The Tribunals, Courts and Enforcement Act 2007, had a significant effect upon the tribunal structure within England and Wales. Firstly, it organised the tribunal system into something resembling a contemporary judicial system: including an Upper Tier Tribunal to function as an appellate court from decisions of the First-Tier Tribunal. At present, tribunals deal with a wide range of disputes: from commercial tax disputes between companies and HMRC to immigration appeals against decisions of the Home Office. In terms of number of cases, the tribunal system deals with more per annum, than the High Court, the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court combined.
Moreover, the increasing spread of labour, and the global influence of companies whose employees originate from all over the world, mean that tribunals have become increasingly international. As such, there is a growing need and demand for linguistic support.
TJC Global’s specialist linguists provide a precise, efficient and professional tribunal interpreting service, ensuring that language barriers do not impede the exchange of crucial information. We can provide interpreters for tribunal hearings and cases of all kinds.
