About the digitalisation of industry

Industry 4.0

The term Industry 4.0 (or “Industrie 4.0”) comes from a German government initiative proposed in 2013 (after it was coined at the Hanover Fair in 2011). The 4.0 originates from the idea that we are now experiencing the fourth industrial revolution; the first being mechanisation (late 18th – early 19th century), the second, the advent of electricity (late 19th – early 20th century) and the third, the switch from analogue to digital technology (1950s – 1970s). The fourth, happening now, marks the introduction of intelligence, connectivity and much broader computerisation in manufacturing. “Industry 4.0” is commonly used in Europe and Asia to refer to the general computerisation of industry.

The Internet of Things (IoT)

A term used widely in the USA. According to oxforddictionaries.com, The Internet of Things is “the interconnection via the internet of computing devices embedded in everyday objects, enabling them to send and receive data.” The addition of “Industrial”, as in “The Industrial Internet of Things” (IIoT) occurs when this principle is applied in the manufacturing sector.

Smart Manufacturing

According to Search Business Analytics, “Smart manufacturing (SM) is a technology-driven approach that utilizes Internet-connected machinery to monitor the production process. The goal of SM is to identify opportunities for automating operations and use data analytics to improve manufacturing performance.”
