One of the six official languages of the European Union, Russian is in fact the most widely spoken native language in Europe with native speakers numbering 144 million in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. It is also an official language in Kazakhstan and Kyrgzstan. People from countries which were once part of the Soviet Union, such as Moldovia, Lativia and Lithuania all, also speak a lot of Russian, although in these nations, the language does not have official status.
The Russian language is a member of the Slavic family, which also includes Polish, Bulgarian, Czech, Slovak and Croatian among many others. A modern version of the Cyrillic (кириллица) alphabet, consisting of 33 letters, is used for written Russian. It is also possible to transliterate Russian words using the Latin alphabet when a Cyrillic keyboard is not available.
Surprisingly, Russian is the second most used language on the internet after English with 5.9% of all websites using this language.
Like any other nation, Russia has its own business etiquette. See our Doing Business in Russia Page to find out more.
