About Dutch

Dutch (aka. Flemish when spoken in Belgium) is a West Germanic language spoken primarily in the Netherlands and as one of the three official languages of Belgium alongside French and German. It is also used in an administrative capacity in those countries which historically comprised the "Netherland Antilles" including Suriname, the islands of Curaçao, Sint Maarten, Aruba, Bonaire, Saba, and Sint Eustatius. It is a close relative of Afrikaans, one of the official languages of South Africa, which is derived from Dutch. This is due to the presence of Dutch settlers in South Africa during the 18th and 19th centuries. It is estimated that 90 - 95% of Afrikaans is of Dutch origin and the two languages are often mutually intelligible, especially in written form.

Dutch is one of the official languages of the European Union and has approximately 23 million native speakers worldwide. Interestingly, it is thought to be the most easily attainable foreign language for native English speakers, probably due to similarities in origin and lexicon, although it is not currently one of the primary languages taught in English schools.

It originates from Low Franconian and its use can be dated back to the 12th century.  In the Middle Ages, it was one of the languages of the people, hence its name - originally "Dietsc", or "Duutsc", equivalent to the German "Deutsch", which means literally, “language of the people”. It was thus somewhat different from the Latin which dominated religion and education.

As suggested, Dutch bears many similarities to both German and English. In fact 70% of the population of the Netherlands can speak fluent English and 55-59% of Dutch people also speak German!

What form/s of interpretation do TJC Global's Dutch interpreters provide?

Image and video hosting by TinyPicSimultaneous interpreting requires lots of skill and experience and can be very tiring for an interpreter, which is why it is common for two interpreters to work in partnership.  They listen via a headset to the speaker and interpret what is being said into a microphone for the relevant audience members taking it in turns every 15/20 minutes.

Simultaneous interpretation like this is commonly required at conferences that involve several different languages and a large number of participants.

Image and video hosting by TinyPicConsecutive interpreting is the most common type of interpreting. It is used for business discussions, negotiations, contract exchanges, commercial discussions, legal, technical discussions, medical or court hearings or on site inspections. The interpreter listens to the speaker, often making notes, and delivers the meaning in the target language afterwards. If a speech is delivered, the interpreter may wait until a pause or the end, at which point they deliver a translation relatively quickly. Consecutive interpreting may also be used at conferences for panel discussions, Q&A sessions or private discussions between parties - at a stall or elsewhere.

Image and video hosting by TinyPicFacilitating interpreting is used when a client has limited English / source language skills but requires technical or in depth terminology to be clarified in their native tongue to avoid misunderstandings.

The facilitating interpreter is there primarily to ensure communication is effective and relieve the client from the fatigue of speaking in a foreign tongue.

Image and video hosting by TinyPicTelephone interpreting allows parties of different nationalities, who are not able to meet in person, to communication via telephone or video conferencing.

The interpreter bridges the gap. Sometimes an interpreter is present in one of the two locations, and sometimes he/she is also located somewhere apart from both parties.
